Caught in between the menacing red-shirted army and the opposition Puea Thai party bent on toppling the government on one side and the increasing pressure for charter amendments from their coalition partners on the other, the Democrats are faced with a difficult decision.
The executive committee of the Democrat Party is to meet on Tuesday to decide on their position on the proposed constitutional amendments, particularly the change to the electoral system, after party members failed to reach a consensus at a seminar over the weekend in Krabi province.
Opinions are equally divided among Democrat members on moving from multiple-MP constituencies as mandated by the existing charter to a single-MP constituency system as proposed by the coalition partners.
Those who oppose the proposed change, reportedly led by former party leader Banyat Bantadtan, are concerned that it may not be in the party's best interests as it will enable rival parties to be more competitive and possibly break into their traditional political stronghold in the South where they have dominated for decades.
