Raids uncover arms and ammunition cache

The Crime Suppression Division is gathering evidence to issue a warrant for the arrest of army specialist Khattiya Sawasdipol after raids on his house and of three of his close associates resulted in the seizure of a number of weapons and ammunition.
Acting CSD chief Supisarn Phakdinaruenart yesterday said Maj Gen Khattiya, widely known as Seh Daeng, could face charges of possessing war weapons.
Judge Advocate-General Department officers yesterday waited at Suvarnabhumi airport to take Maj Gen Khattiya in for questioning after the raid but he had cancelled his return flight from Hat Yai.
The raids followed an M79 grenade attack last Thursday night on the office of army chief Anupong Paojinda.
A grenade was also fired at the Defence Ministry the same day, an army source said. Nobody was injured in either of the attacks.Security has been beefed up for Gen Anupong, the army head office and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon.
Maj Gen Khattiya is suspected of involvement in the attacks. But he denied the allegations on Wednesday.
In the raid yesterday on his house in the compound of the 4th Cavalry Battalion in the Kiakkai area, CSD police, military police and Judge Advocate-General's Department officers seized a number of weapons and ammunition.
