The cabinet on Tuesday agreed that the military would help police handle expected protests by the red-shirts of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) over the next few weeks, acting government spokesman Panithan Wattanayagorn said.
The spokesman said the resolution, effective immiately, was passed after the cabinet was briefed on the movements of the red-hirts. Soldiers would be asked for help, if the situation warranted it.
The government would initially apply general law, but if things became violent the Internal Security Act would be invoked, Mr Panithan said.
Mr Panithan said the cabinet also approved a budget of 24 billion baht for the Air Force to buy six more Gripen jet fighters, provide 18 scholarships for training and to upgrade 18 F-16 jets.
