A joint meeting of the House of Representatives and the Senate on Thursday voted to postpone indefinitely deliberation of the two charter amendment bills in the first and second readings.
The meeting, chaired by Parliament President Chai Chidchob, was scheduled to consider two amendment bills. They were both put on the agenda by Mr Chai, a member of the coalition Bhumjaithai Party.
The first bill was proposed in 2008 by the People's Committee for Amending the 2007 Constitution led by Weng Tochirakarn of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD). Mr Chai suddenly put it on today's meeting agenda on Wednesday, apparently catching the prime minister's Demlocrat Party off guard.
The second amendment bill was submitted this month by the five junior parties in the coalition government - Bhumjaithai, Chart Thai Pattana, Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana, Puea Pandin and Social Action - who are at odds with the Democrat Party, which rejected the changes...
Members of parliament voted 278 to 212, with 25 abstentions, to postpone deliberation of the two bills until a date to be fixed and instead moved up six international agreements for consideration. The meeting was attended by 515 parliamentarians.
