Coalition parties have blasted the People's Alliance for Democracy for its move to submit a petition to impeach the 102 coalition MPs who have proposed the charter amendment motion to parliament.
The parties yesterday said the PAD, which has now formed the New Politics Party, should not have submitted the petition as they, as MPs, had acted within the scope of their duties as members of the lower house.
"Our move to amend the charter is nothing but it has not pleased the PAD. This [the proposed amendment] is a parliamentary matter meaning that MPs can do this so I would like to ask why they [the PAD] have filed the impeachment motion," said Wachara Kanika, spokesman for the Chart Thai Pattana Party, a coalition member.
Yellow-clad PAD representatives yesterday submitted a letter to Senate Speaker Prasobsuk Boondej informing him they would gather signatures to demand the impeachment of the 102 MPs who proposed the charter amendment motion to parliament.
PAD member Tul Shitthisomwong said the MPs had proposed the amendment to further their own interests and that violated the constitution as Section 122 of the 2007 charter prohibited them from having a conflict of interest.
Coalition parties want to change Section 94 to have the single-seat constituency system and also Section 190 which requires the government to seek parliamentary approval before signing any international agreements.
Boonjong Wongtrairat, deputy interior minister and deputy leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, said the 102 MPs had only exercised their rights under Section 291 of the charter which allowed them to propose constitutional amendments. Whether the proposal would be successful was another matter, he said.
