Puea Thai Party member Panlop Pinmanee declared on Friday he will no longer take part in any activities of the red shirts of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship.
The former deputy director of the Internal Security Operations Command said this after Jatuporn Promphan, a UDD leader, voiced disagreement with his remark about making Puea Thai chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh supreme commander of the "national people's army for democracy."
Mr Jatuporn said what Gen Panlop said did not represent the views of the red shirts.
Gen Panlop said he, therefore, would end his participation in the UDD. If any serious incidents took place in February, it should be clear that he had anything to do with them, he added.
The retired army officer insisted that former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, whom he and Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol met in Dubai earlier this week, agreed that Gen Chavalit should be the leader of the red shirts.
However, Gen Panlop said the name "people's army" he mentioned might have caused misunderstanding.
He insisted that the "people's army" would not be armed. However, it would be an effective people's army which had clear policies and adhered to peaceful struggle. It should be able to draw more people to join it in a larger number than sympathisers of the red shirts, he added.
