Former army chief Chaisit Shinawatra has offered to take army commander-in-chief Anupong Paojinda to visit the red-shirts and their leaders at Ratchaprasong intersection rally site to see what is happening there.
“Gen Anupong should visit the rally site to see the real situation and to meet the red-shirts to discuss ways to get the country out of political crisis. If the army chief wants to go, I will take him there”, Gen Chaisit said on Saturday.
The retired general said he supports the prime minister’s decision to appoint Gen Anupong as head of the Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situations, replacing Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban. He believed the situation would gradually improve soon after this.
Regarding the remark that fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shnawatra was to be held responsible for the April 10 violent riot, Gen Chaisit, an elder cousin of the ex-premier, said Thaksin was just a scapegoat.
“The government has never taken a step back as asked for by several parties. It still has the same firm standpoint even if a large number of people and soldiers were killed and injured”, Gen Chaisit said.
