ABHISIT SOFTENS OVER KEY DEMAND
KRABI : The Democrat Party is likely to cave in to mounting pressure by yielding to its coalition partners' demand for constitution amendments on two points.
A final say on whether to support the charter changes will be made by the party executive committee, according to a source at a Democrat seminar yesterday in Krabi province.
Still, the party source said that most of the executive committee members are in the camp of Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban who supports keeping the coalition government intact.
The coalition partners are seeking changes to Section 94, which deals with the election system, and Section 190 which requires the government to seek parliamentary approval before signing any agreement that could affect national sovereignty as well as social and economic security.
In relation to Section 94, the Democrats' coalition partners prefer single-seat constituencies, or smaller constituencies, over multi-seat constituencies to ensure a level playing field in a general election. It is argued that a small constituency is cheaper to campaign in for small parties.
