The effect of the censure debate on the government is looking weakened after the opposition's lead debater, Chalerm Yubamrung, was accused of secretly consorting with a government coalition party, a Puea Thai Party source says.
Mr Chalerm is said to favour dropping Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul from the list of censure debate targets.
Although the choice of those to be censured will be decided by a Puea Thai meeting, Mr Chalerm's attempt to spare Mr Chavarat, the leader of the key coalition partner Bhumjaithai Party, has raised eyebrows within the Puea Thai ranks, the source said.
The source said some party members believed Mr Chalerm might have struck a deal with Mr Chavarat in which Bhumjaithai might accommodate him if and when he decides to part ways with Puea Thai.
