Government whips have decided not to table a charter amendment motion for parliament's consideration today.Government chief whip Witthaya Kaewparadai yesterday said the charter review motion would not go on the agenda when parliament meets today.
Five junior coalition parties last week submitted a motion to change two sections of the constitution: Section 190, which requires the government to receive parliamentary approval for any international agreements it enters, and Section 94, to change the voting system from multi-seat to single-seat constituencies.
"We all agree that the timing is not quite right to work on the charter amendment," Mr Witthaya said. "The motion will be discussed at the next meeting of parliament." The date of the next meeting has not yet been set.
Today's meeting would focus on six international agreements. The delay in deliberating the constitutional amendments a could ease the dispute between the ruling Democrat Party and its coalition partners. The five junior parties had showed signs of being upset with the Democrat Party after it chose not to support their bid to amend the constitution.
